Michael Corleone har netop overtaget jobbet som mafialeder efter sin far Vito. Vi følger hans kamp om at holde familien samlet og om muligt skaffe endnu mere magt i 50’ernes USA. Hovedparten af indkomsterne kommer fra casinoet i Las Vegas. Michael forsøger at udvide denne forretning til Cuba, men revolutionen kommer imellem. Michael bliver mere og mere mistænksom overfor sine omgivelser. Han mistænker alle og bliver til sidst totalt alene. Alle hans nærmeste har enten forladt ham eller er blevet skaffet af vejen...
